Zovirax (acyclovir) was approved by the FDA for treatment of various virus infections in the 1980s. Today, it is one of the oldest medications used for managing herpes simplex viruses. It is still one of the popular drugs for treating the mentioned conditions.
Zovirax is able to prevent viruses from multiplying and dividing, relieving unpleasant symptoms. The medication is available in different forms, including tablets, capsules and liquids.
Zovirax (acyclovir) belongs to antiviral drugs. It does not cure the virus but decreases the symptoms of the infection. It is prescribed for treating cold sores, shingles, genital herpes and chicken pox. The treatment should be started as soon as the first signs of infection appear. In some cases, this medication may be used for treating herpes infections in patients with HIV.
Zovirax is not suitable for people who experience an allergic reaction due to its use. This drug should be taken carefully if the following health conditions take place:
Since this medication may cause drowsiness or dizziness, it is recommended to avoid driving or doing any other activity requiring alertness. As for alcoholic beverages, you should decrease their consumption or stop taking them at all during the period of treatment.
No immunizations or vaccinations should take place while taking Zovirax unless you receive another recommendation from your healthcare provider.
It may be allowed to use this drug during pregnancy, but only if it is really needed. Although the ingredients of Zovirax may appear in breast milk, this drug may be used in some cases during the breastfeeding period.
There are 51 drugs known to interact with Zovirax. The use of this drug with cidofovir, sirolimus, tacrolimus and tizanidine may lead to major drug interactions, which may cause the following effects:
